What is the difference between a lateral and crestal sinus lift?

The lateral (external) sinus lift involves creating a window in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus, allowing direct visualization and greater volume of bone graft placement - used when residual bone height is less than 4-5mm. The crestal (internal) sinus lift is a less invasive approach performed through the implant osteotomy site using osteotomes to gently push the sinus membrane upward - suitable when residual bone height is 5-8mm. The sinus lifting kit includes instruments for both techniques.

When is a sinus lift necessary before implant placement?

A sinus lift is indicated when: residual bone height in the posterior maxilla is insufficient for standard implant length, the maxillary sinus has pneumatized into the implant zone following tooth loss, or when immediate implant placement is not possible due to inadequate bone volume. Sinus lifting kits for the crestal and lateral approaches, with calibrated drills, stoppers, osteotomes, reamers and membrane elevators in a single sterilizable tray. Designed to reach the sinus floor in a controlled way while protecting the Schneiderian membrane.

Crestal kits use stoppers of increasing length and rounded reamers to lift the floor through the implant site, so the implant can often be placed at the same visit. Lateral kits open a window in the sinus wall for larger augmentations.

Measure the residual bone height on a CBCT scan and set the stoppers from that measurement. Having every instrument in one kit keeps the sequence clear during surgery.
