Ridge Spreading

Ridge spreading and bone expansion instruments for narrow alveolar ridges, including spreaders, expander drills and surgical mallets. They widen the ridge by moving bone rather than removing it, so an implant can be placed where the crest was too thin.

Expansion works best in the maxilla and in softer bone, where the buccal plate can flex. Work up in small increments and give the bone time to adapt at each step to avoid fracturing the plate.

In dense bone, a crestal split with a saw disc or piezo tip before expansion makes the process more controlled.
