The sequence usually starts with a lance or pilot drill to mark the site and set the angle, then moves through increasing diameters. Conical drills match tapered implants and cylindrical drills match parallel walled ones. Stoppers limit depth, which adds safety near the sinus or the nerve.

Drills should run with generous irrigation at the recommended speed. Replace them as the cutting edge wears, since a dull drill raises bone temperature and slows healing.
