Equipment used at the chair rather than at the laboratory bench: handpieces and micromotors, air polishing systems, diagnostic devices and the small powered tools that support a working day of treatment. This is the hardware a practice buys when equipping a new operatory or replacing a unit that has reached the end of its service life, and it is chosen on reliability and serviceability as much as on specification.
Handpieces and motors. Low-speed surgical handpieces with internal and external irrigation for implant placement, and straight and contra-angle handpieces for restorative preparation, trimming and finishing. Reduction ratio and irrigation route are what decide whether a handpiece suits surgery or restorative work.
Air polishing and prophylaxis. Supragingival and subgingival air flow polishers, handheld units and handpiece-mounted systems, with the powders and prophy brushes that run with them.
Diagnostics. Electronic pulp testers for vitality assessment before restorative or endodontic treatment, giving a reading that can be repeated at review rather than judged on symptoms alone.
Chairside fabrication and patient comfort. Vacuum forming plates for whitening trays and splints, thermoplastic compound and tracing sticks for border work, and anesthetic carpule warmers.
Buying considerations. Check the coupling standard before ordering a handpiece, confirm that spare cartridges and service parts are available, and make sure anything that enters the sterile field can be autoclaved at the temperature your practice runs.
